Another great act in the city!

Saturday night, San Antonio’s Aztec Theatre hosted one of the most iconic and enduring bands of the 1980’s ‘new wave’ of British bands, the Psychedelic Furs.

As the song-brothers Richard and Tim Butler strutted casually onto the stage, colored lights glinting off their sunglasses, the crowded venue gave a roaring welcome, letting the band know that while the decades may have come and gone, the music of the Psychedelic Furs has never left the hearts and ears of their fans.

Fresh off the release of their first studio album in years, ‘Made of Rain’, the ‘Furs being absolute veterans of touring, have taken the show on the road once again. Wasting no time reminding us just how devastatingly good their music is, driving straight into their biggest hit ‘Love My Way’ on the second song. With Richard’s voice seemingly unaltered by time, his post-punk Bowie-esque timbre crooned softly over the song’s ingenious use of a marimba to form the song’s main melody.

In this post-post-everything, compulsive, social media-driven free-fall into what feels like no direction, what a blissful reprieve it is to hear such well-written songs, the structure, the chord sequences, the lyrics so brilliant they cling in your mind as personal mantras. “I Follow Where My Mind Goes” Butler says, and the audience followed attentively along as the band introduced fans to their latest material, mixed seamlessly with classics from nearly every album in their catalog.

As the Who-like opening chords of ‘Pretty In Pink’ strummed, the astute crowd quickly picked up on the tune and joined in; the song uniting the band and the audience in a joyful sing-along, young and old alike, shouting out loud and dancing to the band’s lustful anthem to the youthful promiscuity of “Caroline”, the songs pastel adorned muse.

The Psychedelic Furs remain a lively and enduring act, their songwriting prowess put to stage in a way that does not disappoint.
