From The Editor
Today, June 30, 2025, marks the fourth anniversary of the very reason why The Heart Sounds exists.
It was exactly four years ago in Laredo, Texas, when I—Nacho, editor and photographer of THS—was taken into the operating room for a 5-bypass heart surgery. Yes—not one, not two, not three or four, but five bypasses!
Those were incredibly difficult days, filled with fear and anxiety about what might happen next. But thanks to the amazing doctors and nurses, and the unwavering support of my family and friends, I made it through the toughest challenge of my life.
I spent eight days in the ICU due to the severity of the open-heart surgery and some postoperative complications. As a nurse told me, “Nacho, you had the full Disney experience—everything happened to you!” And yes, I did have the full experience.
But beyond the stress and tension of the surgery itself, finding out I’d actually had a heart attack without even knowing it, facing future cardiac rehabilitation, and needing to change my lifestyle and habits, it was during those same days that I truly started to appreciate every moment and every breath.
Why not have an online magazine in San Antonio, Texas, that focuses on music? Why not create a magazine with an open door for freelance photographers and writers who share the same passions I do?
And just like that, during a trip to see my cardiologist in Laredo—and with the help of my wife, Mayela, and my friend Joselo—the whole idea took shape, and a name was chosen.
This next photo might be a little too much, but it’s a reminder to keep eating healthy, exercising, and maintaining good habits.
And my dear friends, after four years, my heart hasn’t stopped fighting. The heart still beats, the heart still pumps, and The Heart Sounds!!!
