Austin gets baptized in soul, funk, and style!

It was one of those warm Austin nights where the heat lingers even after sunset. The kind where your shirt sticks just a little, but no one minds. The Moody Amphitheater in Austin, Texas, sat glowing in the dusk, a soft golden haze from the stage lights stretching out over a crowd that looked relaxed, easy. People were sipping beers, chatting, and fanning themselves with folded-up setlists. It didn’t feel like a high-energy sprint. More like everyone had come to exhale.

I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew Teddy Swims had that kind of voice you don’t forget once you hear it, but I hadn’t seen him live before. I was curious to see if that soul would hit the same in person. Honestly, I just hoped he’d sound like himself. That’s all I wanted. No big spectacle, just the honesty you feel in his records.

I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy Tour

He came out without fanfare. Just Teddy! Cutoff shirt, tear-away shorts, slides. Like he could’ve been at a cookout instead of a stage. It made everyone instantly at ease. Then he started singing “Not Your Man,” and that was it. The whole place shifted.

His voice filled the space with this quiet power. It wasn’t showy. It was real. Textured, warm, a little rough around the edges in the best way. The kind of voice that feels like it’s been through something.

What struck me most was how grounded it all felt. No overproduction. No forced crowd work. Just someone who really means what he sings. He moved around the stage like he was just hanging out with us, barefoot half the time, laughing between songs, talking like we were friends he hadn’t seen in a while.

People sang along, but not in that “scream every word” way. More like they were harmonizing with something that already lived in them.

By the time he dropped “Hammer To The Heart,” it was clear this wasn’t just soul music. It was a cathartic outcry wrapped in funk grooves and gospel fire. “Apple Juice” brought a more playful warmth, his voice dancing through every note with buttery ease. But it was “Lose Control” that detonated the crowd—spine-tingling, emotionally nuclear, and sung like a man at the end of his rope, pulling everyone with him. Then came the closer, “The Door,” a masterclass in build and release. By the final chorus, Swims had everyone screaming, swaying, and sobbing all at once.

A Voice Forged in Realness

Before the world knew Teddy Swims, he was Jaten Dimsdale—a Georgia-born soul with tattoos, football dreams, and a genre-defying gift. Raised on a healthy dose of Motown, gospel, and metal, Teddy was never meant to fit in a box. His rise came through raw YouTube covers that stripped songs to the bone, revealing his powerhouse vocals and unshakable sincerity. But it wasn’t just the voice that caught on—it was his heart-on-sleeve honesty. Whether tackling Shania Twain or Marvin Gaye, he made each track his own, showing the world that vulnerability was his superpower.

Swims broke through with his original material in 2020, and it’s been a rocket ride ever since. Blending R&B, country, soul, funk, and pop, he carved a space few dare to enter: the space of real feeling. Now, with his major label debut and therapy-themed tour, Teddy is rewriting what emotional masculinity in music can look like. He’s not here to pretend. He’s here to feel—and make you feel, too.

By the end of the night, I wasn’t thinking about standout songs or vocals or production. I just felt full. Like I’d been reminded of something simple and good. Teddy didn’t try to impress anyone, and that’s what made it hit so hard. It felt like he was exactly who he is on the records: honest, open, and just human.

Some shows blow you away. This one didn’t need to. It just met you where you were and made you feel okay there.
