A night of groove-heavy R&B and heart-on-sleeve honesty!

On a warm September night in San Antonio, the historic Aztec Theatre became a temple of groove, sweat, and unshakable joy. The sold-out crowd packed in tight, buzzing with anticipation for a night where vintage soul collided with a modern pulse. Opener The Psycodelics set the mood immediately, washing the room in deep funk basslines, honeyed vocals, and rhythms designed to make hips sway. Their blend of psychedelic groove and R&B swagger carved the perfect runway for what was to come.

By the time Durand Jones & The Indications emerged, the room was already alive with restless energy — a collective heartbeat waiting to sync with every downbeat. What followed was a two-hour masterclass in soul revival: smooth harmonies, aching ballads, dance-floor igniters, and a rare intimacy that made the venue feel smaller than its 1,500 capacity. It wasn’t just a concert; it was communion through music!

THE PSYCODELICS

The Psycodelics wasted no time igniting the night. Their set was a kaleidoscope of funk, R&B, and groove-heavy soul, dripping with rhythm that seemed to pour right from the stage into the audience’s bloodstream. With each number, they proved why they’ve become a name to watch. “So Sweet” opened like a candy rush, sugary but with a bite, pulling fans instantly into their orbit. The crowd didn’t just listen — they moved, bodies locked into the bass as if hypnotized.

“Won’t Chew” hit harder, anchored by irresistible percussion and a sly vocal delivery that felt both playful and slyly dangerous. By the time they slipped into “Fallen,” the band had the Aztec swaying like a tide, their sound conjuring the shimmer of late-night neon. Their stage presence was loose yet magnetic, a reminder of how live music should feel — raw, sweaty, and alive.

What set The Psycodelics apart wasn’t just their musicianship, but their ability to make the Aztec feel like an after-hours jam session with friends. There was no barrier between band and audience — just grooves looping endlessly until everyone was caught inside. It was the perfect spark before the blaze.

DURAND JONES & THE INDICATIONS

FLOWERS TOUR

When Durand Jones & The Indications stepped onto the Aztec stage, the air shifted. Dressed sharp but radiating ease, Jones carried himself with the calm authority of a preacher about to deliver gospel through groove. The audience roared before a single note rang out, already swept into the current.

The set unfurled with precision and warmth, spotlighting songs that balance heartbreak and joy in equal measure. “Circles” shimmered like a time capsule, its silky harmonies weaving a spell across the room. On “The Way That I Do,” Jones’s voice cracked open with a tenderness that silenced the chatter — every word landing like a confession.

Then came the burst: “Witchoo” turned the Aztec into a disco-funk fever dream, fans clapping and shouting every chorus back at the band, as if unwilling to let the groove end. But the final stretch left the deepest mark. “Too Many Tears”swelled with cathartic ache, a ballad heavy with longing, while closer “Sea Gets Hotter” transformed that ache into triumph, a joyful release that left the crowd glowing.

What made the performance unforgettable was the band’s balance — impeccable musicianship wrapped around Jones’s emotive power. Every lyric felt lived-in, every note tethered to the heart. By the end, the Aztec wasn’t just a venue; it was a soul sanctuary.

The Rise of Yungblud

Hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, Durand Jones & The Indications began as a project among friends at Indiana University, fusing their shared love of classic soul and R&B into something distinctly modern. What started as basement jam sessions quickly caught fire, their raw recordings resonating with listeners craving authenticity in a world of polished pop. With Jones’s voice — a blend of grit, honey, and gospel fire — at the forefront, the band built a sound steeped in the traditions of Curtis Mayfield and Al Green but sharpened by contemporary storytelling.

Their rise was fueled by grassroots love: DIY touring, word-of-mouth buzz, and a steady stream of records that blurred the line between retro and timeless. What makes them unique isn’t just nostalgia, but their ability to make soul feel alive, urgent, and necessary in the now.

As the last notes of “Sea Gets Hotter” rang out, the Aztec crowd lingered, reluctant to step back into reality. Nights like this remind us why live music endures: the unspoken bond between performer and audience, the catharsis of shared sound, and the way a song can dissolve the weight of the world for just a few hours.

Durand Jones & The Indications didn’t just play a concert — they curated an experience, one rooted in nostalgia yet blooming into the future. Paired with the vibrant spark of The Psycodelics, the evening showcased how soul continues to evolve without losing its essence. For San Antonio, this was more than a stop on the Flowers Tour; it was a living testament to the power of groove, harmony, and collective release. And for everyone lucky enough to be inside, it was a night that will echo long after the house lights came up.
