Voices Shaping Music!

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dalia Cerezo, Senior Manager, Marketing US Latin at Downtown Music Distribution, for a thoughtful conversation about her journey in the music industry, the evolving landscape of music marketing, and the growing influence of women across the global music scene. And what better moment to share this conversation than during March, widely celebrated as Women’s Month—a time to recognize the achievements, creativity, and leadership of women in every field.

Throughout our discussion, Dalia shared insights into the dynamic world of music and marketing. From strategy and storytelling to the importance of understanding fans in the digital age, her perspective highlights how the industry continues to evolve—and how passionate professionals help shape its future.

We hope you enjoy this conversation with Dalia as much as we enjoyed speaking with her, and that her story offers inspiration to everyone who believes in the power of music, creativity, and perseverance.

– How did your story with music begin, and when did you realize you wanted to work in the industry?
Music was always present in my life — at home, with my family, at school. I always felt it was a form of identity and connection. But it wasn’t until I started university to study Entertainment Business Management that I started taking it more seriously and realized, wow, you can actually turn a passion into a way of life. Later, when I moved to the United States and began working at SiriusXM and Pandora, I truly understood the real impact music has on culture. That’s when I knew I didn’t just want to listen to it — I wanted to be part of how it’s shaped and amplified.

– What has your experience been like growing professionally as a woman in the music business?
It has been a constant growth process. It’s an industry historically dominated by men, especially within Latin music. But I learned to trust my judgment, defend my ideas, and confidently take up space. I’ve also had the privilege of working alongside incredibly talented and powerful women who are changing the narrative. Today, I feel we are building a more diverse and conscious industry.

– What has been the most challenging and the most rewarding part of your journey?
The most challenging part has been staying current and relevant in an industry that changes every day. Platforms evolve, algorithms shift, audiences transform. The most rewarding part is seeing artists you believe in grow. Watching a campaign come to life — from strategy to playlists, media coverage, live experiences, or even seeing how a song changes a fan’s life — is deeply fulfilling.

– Do you remember your first concert? How did you feel that day?
I don’t remember the very first one, but I clearly remember the first concert that truly marked my life and vision — Shakira’s, around 2011. I was in the front row. Seeing her up close, feeling the collective emotion, the energy of the crowd, the sense of belonging to something bigger — it made me understand that music isn’t just heard, it’s lived.

– Which artists or bands defined your teenage years?

I was a romantic teenager, completely in love with love — so definitely Shakira, Backstreet Boys, and Britney were the first artists who made me cry and experience all those intense teenage emotions.

– Who are your favorite artists in Spanish?

As a Mexican woman, I feel a very strong connection to Mexican music and Latin music in general. Carín León, Elsa y Elmar, and J Balvin and the Buena Vista Social Club are some of my favorites. I deeply admire artists who have preserved their cultural identity while expanding their global reach.

– And in English?

I could listen to John Mayer and Harry Styles all day.

– What kind of music do you listen to when you need inspiration?

It depends on the moment and my mood. If I need creativity, I usually turn to calm music, lo-fi sounds, or some son cubano — although sometimes nostalgia is also a powerful source of inspiration.

– Is there a female artist you admire for the way she has managed her career?
There are many women I admire, but someone like Omara Portuondo represents something very special to me. She embodies elegance, resilience, and artistic longevity. Her career wasn’t built on urgency or trends, but on authenticity and deep respect for her craft.

– What advice would you give to other women who want to enter the music industry?

Learn the business and build your network. This industry moves through relationships, trust, and reputation. Surround yourself with people who challenge you, uplift you, and share similar values. It’s not just about contacts — it’s about community. Passion is essential, but understanding data, strategy, and negotiation makes the difference. Don’t ask for permission to take up space. And build support networks among women — collaboration is power.

– If you weren’t working in music, what would you be doing?

Probably something related to brand partnerships strategy and culture. I’ve always been passionate about building narratives and connecting audiences.

– How do you define your leadership in three words?

Strategic. Empathetic. Visionary.

As our conversation comes to a close, we would like to thank Dalia Cerezo for taking the time to share her story, insights, and passion for the music industry. Her dedication, vision, and leadership at Downtown Music Distribution are a reminder of the important role that creative and driven professionals play in shaping the future of music.
